How to renew your Nigerian passport in Czech Republic

If your passport expires while you are in the Czech Republic, you do not need to return to Nigeria. The Nigerian Embassy in Prague can process renewals. Here is the step-by-step process.

Who can renew at the embassy?

  • Eligible: Any Nigerian citizen holding a valid residence permit in Czech Republic
  • Processing: Done at Nigerian Embassy in Prague (only one embassy in Czech Republic)
  • Not urgent?: You can also renew by sending documents to Nigeria if there is no time pressure
  • Timeline: Embassy processing typically 2-4 weeks for routine renewal

Step 1: Gather required documents

  • Original expiring/expired passport
  • Birth certificate: Original or certified copy (should be internationally acceptable)
  • National ID (NIN): If you have one, bring it
  • Passport-size photos: 4 recent photos (4x6cm) with white background
  • Completed passport application form: Available from embassy website or in person
  • Proof of residence: Lease agreement, student dorm confirmation, or utility bill showing your Czech address
  • Evidence of Czech residence permit: Copy of your residence card or long-term visa
  • Proof of payment: Receipt showing you have paid passport renewal fees (usually prepared at embassy)

Step 2: Schedule appointment at Nigerian Embassy

  • Address: Nad Pristavem 3, 170 00 Prague 7
  • Phone: +420 233 320 822
  • Website: czechrepublic.embassy.gov.ng
  • How to book: Call or visit in person during business hours to schedule appointment
  • Hours: Typically Monday-Friday, 9am-12pm for walk-ins, exact hours on website
  • Tip: Call ahead to confirm current procedures and requirements (they sometimes change)

Step 3: Attend appointment and submit documents

  • Bring: All documents listed above and your residence card
  • At appointment: Embassy staff will verify your documents, check your information
  • Fees: Paid directly at the embassy. Cost varies but typically between CZK 1,500-3,000 (NGN 6,700-13,500) depending on passport type
  • Processing: Your original passport is taken and a receipt is given
  • Timeline: Collect renewed passport in 2-4 weeks (embassy provides specific date)

Step 4: Collect your renewed passport

  • When: The embassy will give you a specific collection date
  • What to bring: Your receipt and ID (residence card)
  • Important: Mark your calendar. Uncollected passports may be returned to Nigeria after a set period
  • New validity: Standard passport valid for 10 years from issue date

Alternative: Renewal by mail from Nigeria

  • If you prefer: You can have a trusted person submit documents to your home state immigration office in Nigeria
  • Process: Takes 4-8 weeks depending on the state
  • Risk: Rely on someone else to handle documents - more potential for delays
  • Advantage: Wider choice of passport delivery (to Nigeria, or you collect at embassy in Prague later)
  • Cost: Usually slightly cheaper if done in Nigeria

Important reminders about your passport

  • Never let it expire: Expired passport causes problems with residence permits and travel
  • Check expiry date: Check when you arrive so you know the deadline
  • Plan ahead: Start renewal 2-3 months before expiry, not at the last minute
  • Residence card is different: Your Czech residence card does not expire as quickly. Check both dates separately.
  • Keep it safe: A lost or stolen passport in Czech Republic requires police report and emergency travel document
  • Multiple copies: Make scanned copies and keep them digitally and physically separate
