Important insurance details for Nigerian students

  • Insurance is mandatory before arrival: Czech law requires proof of insurance for your residence permit. Plan for this during your visa application stage.
  • Start coverage before your visa: Get a confirmation letter from your insurer to include in your residence permit application.
  • Student insurance is cheapest: If your university offers it, take it. It is reliable and specifically designed for your situation.
  • What is covered: Doctor visits, hospital stays, emergency treatment, basic prescription drugs. Clarify what your specific policy includes before purchasing.
  • What is usually NOT covered: Non-emergency dental work, glasses/contacts, cosmetic procedures, treatment abroad, COVID vaccines (in most policies).
  • No pre-existing exclusions: Most Czech insurers don't exclude pre-existing conditions for international students, but confirm this with your provider.
  • How to use it: Present your insurance card (pojistěnka) at any hospital, clinic, or pharmacy. No claim forms usually needed for Czech providers.
  • Continuity matters: Any gap in coverage can complicate your residence permit renewal. Set reminders for renewal dates.
  • Keep records: Save all insurance documents digitally and in hard copy for the Foreign Police and future applications.
